This is BY FAR the best parenting book Will and I have read. It will be one that we will read several times over the years, no doubt. Every year, our family sets a goal.
2010: Hike 100 miles
2011: Turn off the Cable in our home (and survive)
2012: Embrace the concepts and ideas presented in this book.
The whole concept is that by choosing parenting tactics that allow your kids to have a more sense of ownership in EVERYTHING (their money, bodies, values, goals, etc) that they will be far more interested in their own well being, not to mention being more prepared to enter the world once they move out.
Starting a Family Economy has been the biggest change. You'd have to read the book to get all the details, but in a nut shell, we've increased the kids ability to make money in our home, but they are now responsible for purchasing all their own stuff (yep, school clothes, tooth paste, etc). Funny how suddenly they are taking better care of their stuff and being sure not to waste things. Through this system, I am also NOT that Mom any more that is standing around the house begging them to stay focused and get their stuff done. Since we've started this system, there is WAY less nagging and the kids are actually doing WAY more around the house. LOVE THAT!!!
