Teaching the kids to Stay Strong!!

We have been focusing some of our Family Home Evening lessons with the kids lately on the concept of "Choosing in Advance". There are so many situations that they will find themselves in in the coming years as teenagers that will take tremendous strength and courage. We don't want them to ever feel like they have made a decision simply because they were caught off guard or were not prepared to handle the pressure.

We've been talking (and role playing) about all kinds of scenarios involving drugs, cheating, dating, driving, etc. Of course, we are having some fun doing it, but I think the message is slowly getting through and if they are placed in one of these situations, it will be something that they have really thought about already.

Later in the year, we will be providing them a notebook that they can actually write down some of their "Decisions Made in Advance" and sign them. It will have to come from them, but we hope to see a few entries like, "I will never get in the car with someone who's been drinking".

Below is a video of a small object lesson we used. It's easy to say now, "I will never drink alcohol" but it's certainly a different story when your best friend is and the boy you like is teasing you because you aren't. Again, all scenarios we have role played. We encouraged them to hold their hand still and stay strong, even if they feel the "heat" and trust us that they will be safe if they follow our guidance.

Yes, we are using a burning flame to teach our kids.......Survival of the fittest. Just kidding. :)

That was a cool object lesson, tell me how you did it! You always have the best FHE ideas.
