Thoughts on Haiti

Like many of you, our family has been deeply moved when watching the tragedy in Haiti. It's a constant reminder of how fragile life is.

During such a time of grief, I am comforted by the way our church simply moves into immediate action to help. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints encourages it's members, continually, whether we are having times of trial or peace, to be a prepared people through food storage, Emergency kits, financially, etc, but the church has a whole, practices what it preaches on such a large scale.

The church is sending 80,000lbs of supplies to Haiti, including hygiene kits, personal water filtration systems, blankets, food plus hundreds of nurses and doctors with in the church are volunteering their time to go down and help. All church building in Haiti that have not been affected are being turned into shelters and medical facilities. Trucks left yesterday from the Dominican Republic full of supplies from the church as well.

I am grateful that while I feel helpless to some degree to help, I am part of an organization that is not only willing to help, but is actually ready to help, on a large scale immediately after such a crisis.
